Lazio's most beautiful lakes

The Roman and Lazio countryside, as well as being delightful in its own right, is also home to several wonderful lakes. These are perfect for walks by the water and have a host of towns on their shores where you can taste typical local dishes at restaurants with lakeside views. There are five main lakes in Lazio, three on the northern side of the capital and two on the south. Let's explore them in more detail.

Lake Bracciano

Bracciano is probably the most famous lake in Lazio, created from a volcanic depression and surrounded by the Sabatini mountains. The main towns to visit on the lake are Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano. After seeing the unmissable Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, we recommend sampling the local cuisine in one of the restaurants in Trevignano or Bracciano.

Lake Vico

A little further from Rome is Lake Vico, in the province of Viterbo. This is the highest lake in Italy, surrounded by a natural reserve. These two details make it a unique and special place. Ronciglione, Caprarola and San Martino al Cimino are all lakeside towns that deserve a visit.

Lake Bolsena

This may be the furthest lake from Rome, but that doesn't make it any less appealing. Also of volcanic origin, it has two islands, Bisentina and Martana. The nature around this lake is mostly unspoiled and full of interesting plant and animal species. Towns you should visit include Bolsena, Marta and Val del Lago.

Lake Albano

Also known as Lake Castel Gandolfo, it sits 25 kilometres south of Rome and is the deepest volcanic lake in Italy. Its banks conceal several interesting archaeological sites, such as the Village of Milestones and the Villa of Domitian.

Lake Nemi

Just next to Lake Albano, Lake Nemi is also within the Castelli Romani Natural Park. After a refreshing visit to the lake, you can extend your trip to one of the castle towns such as Ariccia or Frascati to taste the area's traditional dishes, especially the famous porchetta meat.
